As a confirmed Film Noir fan for many years, I give NOIR the Art of Rob Moran my highest recommendation. Moran has unique feel for the Noir genre and all of the pugs, thugs, and tough dames who inhabit it. Looking at his work reminds me of all of my favorite Films Noir, and the unforgettable stars who populated them. Anyone who loves The Asphalt Jungle, The Maltese Falcon, The Killing, Kiss Me Deadly, Laura, Crime Wave, Underworld U.S.A., or any of the other countless classics from the Noir era should buy this book. Reproduction is nice, and all of Moran's beautifully-rendered images are presented crisply, in all their hard-edged glory. I can't say enough good things about this book. It brings to life pulp-style imagery with real class. Moran is absolutely a talent to watch. This book is reasonably priced and well-bound. My only complaint is that it's too short.*Grumble* Guess I'll have to wait for the sequal.

Noir the art of Rob Moran Rob Moran 9780615988337 Books Reviews

This Book is a perfect example of not only how black and white should be used to express a mixture of emotions, but also how to tone a scene and make a simple collection of ideas appear in one image. Rob is one of those rare artists that understands the classics and also embraces the new. He can fully comprehend the challenges of classic science fiction as well as the noir imagery and history he is so clearly he is in love with. His versatility is a credit to his talent. His ability to use black and white and almost subtle shades of grey in an industry that thinks colour is everything is a credit to him. I strongly suggest anyone that cares about comics or artwork in general should purchase a copy of this book immediately and marvel at a genuinely talented man at what will be just the start of a long career of getting better and better at what he does. And I personally Iook forward to seeing it.
I'll admit that I'm a little biased when it comes to Rob's work. He did the cover and interior illustrations on my first novel PROHIBITION (also published by Airship 27) and his work really brought my story to life. His work has never failed to impress me since then and I've since become the proud owner of several of his illustrations. Rob doesn't just put lines on a page. His work is dimensional and emotional while capturing all of the tragic qualities that have made noir an enduring art form. Rob Moran is simply the best in the business.
Rob has capture the emotion and beauty in his artwork pieces of an early era in America. Looking through each of the pages you can see that each as a story to tell. I highly recommend this as addition to any book collection on art.
I've loved Rob's work for a long time and I'm certain you will be mesmerized by the style and beauty sandwiched between these covers. Come and get yours before they're all sold out my friends.
I'm a fan of the Art World and more so of the Comic Book Art World. Growing up reading adventures like DOC SAVAGE, GREEN HORNET, THE SHADOW, and so many others I learned to love the Noir genre. I'm also a huge fan of the classic B&W films of the early years of film.
Rob Moran's work in this book captures the feel of the Bogart and Cagney era with such mastery! His art has captured the look and feel of those dames of that era with such a tight grip.
I'm no artist by any means but seeing this work in this magnificent book makes me want to learn to pick up a pencil and take a crack it!!
I encourage everyone to pick up a copy and enjoy it thoroughly like I am -)

I'm so easily drawn to all things noir. The girls, the guns, the despair. They all seem to speak to me in a way few film styles can, and I am clearly not the only one drawn to the darkness. Mr. Moran's art so perfectly captures the essence of the classic film noir era in a way that almost eclipses the original art on the respective movie posters. His black and white work seems to be actually peeling the shadows away just enough to see the lips of the girl who is more than likely pointing a gun at your heart.

All the most dangerous femme fatales are here for your enjoyment, and your inevitable doom. I would crawl into the pages and kill everyone in the room to get to Gloria Grahame, that's how enticing his work is. But he also includes an amazing piece of my all time favorite actor, James Cagney, which jumps out at you and punches you right in the gut.

I admittedly had not been too familiar with Rob Moran's work before seeing this book. But he now has a lifelong fan.
